What IPL is

Intense Pulsed Light applies pulses of light to the skin across the cheeks and around the eyes. In eye care it is used for dry eye associated with meibomian gland dysfunction, and it is often considered for patients who also have ocular rosacea.

IPL is usually given as a short series of sessions rather than a single visit. How many, and how far apart, is decided by your optometrist as part of your assessment.

Whether it is the right treatment for you

That is decided at a dry eye assessment rather than in advance. IPL is not suitable for everyone — skin tone and skin conditions are part of the assessment — and dry eye has several causes that are treated differently. The clinic measures the tear film first, then recommends IPL, LipiFlow or another approach on what it finds.

Booking

IPL consultations and treatments are booked through the Dry Eye Clinic at the Manulife Centre. Book an eye exam or call the clinic to arrange an assessment.
