What LipiFlow is
LipiFlow is an in-office treatment for meibomian gland dysfunction — a common cause of dry eye in which the small oil glands along the eyelid margin stop releasing oil freely. Without that oil, the tear film breaks up faster than it should, which is what many people experience as burning, grittiness or watering.
The device applies controlled warmth to the inner surface of the eyelid and gentle pressure to the outer surface at the same time, in a single session at the Manulife Centre clinic.
Whether it is the right treatment for you
That is decided at a dry eye assessment rather than in advance. Dry eye has several causes and they are treated differently, so the clinic measures the tear film first — Schirmer’s test, TearLab osmolarity, the Ocular Surface Disease Index, corneal staining and a lid assessment — and those results decide whether LipiFlow, IPL or another approach is the place to start.
